Technology as a helping Aid

In my last blog posts I wrote about how technology is used as sport equipment and how it can enhance the athlete’s performance in a competition and maybe give him/her an advantage over the competitors. Also I covered the subject of disability and how technology can enable a disabled person to become an athlete. Now I would like to show you the non-competitive side of technology in sports: Technology as a helping aid in your training.

Evaluating your Performance

For I am a passionate horseback rider, I will concentrate on this type of sport to introduce you to that supporting kind of technology.According to the blogger Christine, technology is now able to help us understand how we ride. Through special strain gauges and sensor mats underneath of the saddle, strapped to the girth, or fitted around the rider’s back, researchers can visualize real-time and highly precise force measurements on their laptops. Then they see how much weight and pressure we put on the different parts of the horse’s body. Also there are devices like infrared light reflective markers that transform the horse’s movements into a moving 3D image.

The International Equitation Science Conference

This conference was also mentioned by the blogger Christine and while investigating it revealed some new and interesting technology. Besides the sensor mats they also presented a heart rate monitoring that could be used to measure the stress response. Two representatives of the Dutch mounted police, who were challenged by several objects, tested this. The monitor showed an increased heart rate, although the horse did not exhibit any fear.

Health Issues

When it comes to horses, technology is also very helpful regarding the health of your animal. This website I found explains the startup called Horse Sense Shoes.  This technology can transmit the performance of your horse through indicators like pressure and heat that are measured by a non-invasive sensor that is embedded in the horseshoe. This can be a very accurate indicator when it comes to health issues. These can be seen very early through this technology and treated before they become severely problematic.

All of those technologies that I just described are very useful tools to enhance the performance of your horse, but not only in the competitive sense, but more in the sense of looking out for your horse by keeping it healthy and choosing the best method to work with it. So I think, when it comes to this, technology is a wonderful invention that should not be stopped.

As I told you I am not into horse riding at all (besides wanting to do it on a beach once) but this post has given me another view on possibly areas of technology. Looking out for any animal’s health is a very good area to introduce technology to and it’s nice that you tracked this down as well. I don’t quite understand the heart rate issue. Was it actually mistaking or did it reveal a heart desease? Maybe I am dumb but sorry.
I wonder though in how far technology increases negligence towards the personal relationship to the horse.

Do you mean the example of the Dutch mounted police? The horses didn’t have a disease, the increased heart rate just revealed that the horses were scared by the objects although they didn’t show it. So through this heart rate monitoring we can try to understand the horses better.

  5. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
